Research Concentration and Dilution Calculations

Concentration describes how much research material is present within a specific volume of solution. Understanding this relationship is essential for accurate laboratory preparation and documentation.

Three Essential Measurements

Milligrams

mg measures the quantity of research material.

Milliliters

mL measures the volume of liquid.

Concentration

mg/mL describes the amount in each milliliter.

Calculating Concentration

Total milligrams ÷ Total milliliters = mg/mL

Example

A laboratory sample contains 10 mg of material in a total volume of 2 mL.

10 mg ÷ 2 mL = 5 mg/mL

Calculating the Required Volume

Required milligrams ÷ Concentration = Required volume

Laboratory Example

A protocol requires a 1 mg research sample from a solution with a concentration of 5 mg/mL.

1 mg ÷ 5 mg/mL = 0.2 mL

Accuracy Checklist

  • Confirm the stated quantity before calculating.
  • Use the final total solution volume—not only the solvent added.
  • Keep milligrams, milliliters and other units clearly identified.
  • Use calibrated laboratory equipment.
  • Record the calculation, preparation date and lot number.
  • Have calculations independently verified when required.
