What Are Peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Amino acids are small building blocks that can connect in different sequences. Researchers study peptides to better understand biological processes, molecular signaling and other laboratory applications.

Research peptides are commonly supplied as a dry, lyophilized powder. Lyophilization is a freeze-drying process used to remove moisture and help support stability during storage and transportation.

Important: A research product is not an approved medication. Product labels, intended-use restrictions and applicable laboratory procedures should always be followed.

Important Terms to Know

Peptide: A chain of amino acids studied in a laboratory setting.
Lyophilized: Freeze-dried to remove moisture, generally leaving a dry powder or compact “cake” inside the vial.
Reconstitution: The laboratory process of adding an appropriate solvent to a dry material to create a solution.
Concentration: The amount of material present within a specified volume of solution, commonly expressed as mg/mL.
Lot number: A unique identifier used to connect a specific product batch to its testing and quality records.
COA: A Certificate of Analysis containing testing information associated with a particular product or lot.

Understanding Testing and COAs

A Certificate of Analysis helps document the identity and analytical results of a tested sample. When reviewing a COA, confirm that the product name and lot number match the information on the vial.

HPLC Analysis

High-performance liquid chromatography separates components within a sample and is commonly used to evaluate purity.

Mass Spectrometry

Mass spectrometry evaluates molecular mass and can help support verification of a sample’s identity.

Purity

Purity describes how much of the analyzed sample corresponds to the main detected component. It is not automatically the same as the total quantity inside the vial.

Lot Matching

Always compare the lot number on the product with the lot number shown in the corresponding COA.

Storage and Laboratory Handling

Storage requirements can vary by compound and formulation. Always follow the product label and applicable laboratory documentation. These general practices can help protect research materials:

  • Limit exposure to excessive heat, direct light and moisture.
  • Avoid unnecessary temperature fluctuations.
  • Keep every vial clearly labeled with its product and lot number.
  • Use clean laboratory equipment and an appropriate workspace.
  • Avoid aggressive shaking unless the protocol specifically requires it.
  • Document preparation dates, storage conditions and observations.
  • Keep research materials secured from children and unauthorized individuals.
